Colorado and Canyon: Striving for the Perfect Body

WENTZVILLE, Mo. – The men and women launching the new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickup trucks at General Motors’ Wentzville Assembly Plant are proud of their “perfect bodies.”

Not necessarily what they see in the mirror but the perfect bodies of the new trucks that began production in September.

Engineers at Wentzville used perfectly measured mockups of the trucks’ interior and exterior and a sophisticated laser-scanning system to test the fit of parts and assemblies both to the “perfect body” and to other parts to which they connect.

Long before the assembly line started to roll, this process identified and aided in the resolution of mismatches and conflicts involving parts and assemblies coming from five GM plants and as many as 20 different suppliers.

More than 200 parts or assemblies were evaluated using the tools before regular production began. One example was an ill-fitting passenger side “A-pillar” between the windshield, instrument panel and headliner. The pillar was disassembled piece by piece uncovering Part Quality, Design, and Assembly issues. Working with all parties they were able to fix the issue and refine the production process before the line ran trucks to be shipped to dealers.

“We’re working with an entirely new vehicle architecture as well as the latest technology available for dimensional management,” said Bryan Vickery, dimensional engineer for Body Maintenance at Wentzville. “The process is a big part of delivering improved body structures, which translates to great vehicles to our customers.”

The tools are still used in production, where they help identify issues undetectable by the human eye.
“The perfect body process helps everyone by quickly identifying the source of a particular issue and giving us guidance on what needs to be done to fix it,” said Mark Deterding, engineering manager for Magna Interiors. “We discover potential issues before they can affect the vehicle’s quality. We identify solutions and we use them to make sure our solutions work.

“It’s an additional step, but we’re happy to spend time with these perfect bodies because they mean safer, quieter and more reliable vehicles for the customer.”

Baby, It’s Cold Inside – Your Tires

Winter-like temps can reduce tire pressure,
 trigger TPMS warning

DETROIT – The polar plunge that has chilled much of the nation does more than bring out ice scrapers and antifreeze. It can trigger vehicles’ tire pressure monitoring systems overnight, sending nervous drivers to dealers and service centers.

For example, by noon Tuesday, about 20 customers had visited George Matick Chevrolet in Redford, Mich. because their tire pressure warning icons were illuminated, said service manager Mike Hawkins.

“We explained why this happens this time of year, quickly re-inflated their tires and sent them on their way,” he said.

Here’s why a cold snap affects tire pressure and sets off the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning lamp:

For every 10-degree-Fahrenheit drop in temperature, tire air pressure decreases about 1 pound per square inch (psi), said David Cowger, global sub-system manager for tires in General Motors’ Tire and Wheel Lab. On top of that, tires slowly lose air anyway – the equivalent of between .25 and .5 psi per month – because air passes through rubber.

“So if you last checked your tire pressure a few months ago when it was 70 degrees and now it’s 20, a tire with a recommended psi of 35 could be down to 27 or 28 and set off the TPMS warning,” said Cowger. “It’s very common when the first cold weather arrives.”

Unless there are issues such as punctures or damage, the TPMS light will turn off once the tires are properly inflated.

It’s important to keep tires inflated to their recommended psi (found on a placard on the driver’s side center pillar or door edge), said Cowger. Underinflated tires can wear out prematurely, negatively affect vehicle handling, reduce fuel economy and overheat, leading to blowout.

Tire pressure monitoring systems have been required on new vehicles since 2007. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires the TPMS to display an alert when a tire’s pressure drops 25 percent below its recommended psi.

GM, along with technician training experts from ACDelco, recommend these tips for cold-weather tire care:

·         If your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, check individual tire pressure readouts in the driver information center and re-inflate to the tires’ recommended psi as necessary
·         Check tire pressure at least monthly with a quality tire gauge, and when the vehicle has been driven less than a mile. Tire inflation increases 2-3 psi when the tires warm up during driving
·         When refueling, visually inspect tires for damage and sharp objects in the tread that could work their way into the tire
·         Have tires rotated and – if needed – balanced according to the schedule in the owner’s manual. If the TPMS isn’t one that automatically resets, a technician will do it manually.

2015 Yukon Denali Gains Eight Gears, Improved Highway Fuel Economy

Updated model also includes
wireless device charging, 4G connectivity

DETROIT – Thanks to the addition of an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission, the updated 2015 GMC Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali models now lead several competitors in horsepower, torque and highway fuel economy ratings.

Both the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali now pair their 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 engines with a new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission,   designed to be more fuel-efficient than the Denali’s previous six-speed automatic. EPA highway mileage estimates for two-wheel drive Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali models increase to 22 mpg with the eight-speed automatic, while the EPA city mileage estimate for the four-wheel drive Yukon Denali model rises to 15 mpg.
Within its segment, the Yukon Denali continues to deliver unrivaled power and efficiency. Denali’s 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 delivers a segment-leading 420 hp and segment-leading 460 lb-ft of torque with highway fuel economy equal to or better than many 6- or 8-cylinder engines in competitive makes.

Compared to the Yukon Denali’s previous six-speed transmission, the new 8L90 transmission offers smaller steps between gears, allowing the engine to efficiently leverage its peak power bands. The wider gearing spread also allows the use of a lower 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, which reduces engine speeds and fuel consumption, especially during highway cruising.

Comfort and capability are not compromised for fuel economy. Not only is the 8L90 transmission capable of handling more torque than the six-speed transmission it replaces, but its shift controls and solenoids are more responsive and provide quicker shift times. A new torque converter also delivers smoother performance at low speeds, especially when carrying heavy loads or pulling trailers. Tow ratings – up to 8,400 pounds for the Yukon Denali and 8,100 pounds for the Yukon XL Denali – are unaffected by the addition of the eight-speed transmission.

The 2015 Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali continue to blend unique design elements with upscale amenities, including premium interior materials.  Convenience and connectivity improvements include:

·         A new hands-free power liftgate, which can be opened and closed by simply passing a foot beneath the rear bumper
·         A wireless charging surface for WPC (Qi) or PMA (Powermat) compatible mobile devices integrated into the design of the center console lid. A list of compatible devices is located at gmtotalconnect.com
·         OnStar with 4G LTE, which provides in-car data connectivity and a Wi-Fi hotspot capable of connecting up to seven devices at one time
·         An enhanced GMC Intellilink system, which provides incoming ‘Text Message Alerts’ when paired to a compatible Bluetooth phone
Owners of 2015 Yukon and Yukon XL models can receive a tutorial on these new features through a new Yukon-specific application for tablet devices, which supplements the owner’s manual. The new Yukon app will be available for both Apple iOS and Android devices.

The updated 2015 Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali models are priced from $64,965 and $67,665 respectively, and are now available at dealers.

Editors’ Note: Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) includes destination freight charge but excludes tax, title, license, dealer fees and optional equipment.
