GM Confirms Eight-Speed Transmission for Half-Ton Pickups

After much speculation, GM confirmed it will be using a brand-new eight-speed transmission for the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks equipped with the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 engine (several full-size SUVs also will get the eight-speed).

The new electronic transmission, called the 8L90, will replace the previous 6L80 on select models, but it is likely to make its way (after some slight modifications) into the smaller 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 as well. The only other pickup with an eight-speed transmission is the Ram 1500 that uses two different versions (the ZF 8HP45 and 8HP70, with a gear spread from 4.71:1 to 0.67:1) to accommodate Ram's three-engine lineup. There is no word about whether GM will offer a smaller, lighter-duty eight-speed to accommodate the smaller EcoTec3 V-8 and standard V-8.

GM notes that the new eight-speed will have an overall gear ratio spread of 7.0. This is likely to mean a much deeper first gear (possibly around 4.65:1) and implies that GM might be able to offer new gear sets to provide much better fuel economy while still offering strong towing numbers.

In a brief press release, GM said that the new transmission will still allow these new powertrains to adhere to Society of Automotive Engineers' J2807 towing standards, providing a segment-leading towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. GM's Toledo, Ohio, transmission plant will begin production of the new eight-speed in the fourth quarter this year and be available for 2015 models. Fuel economy estimates for the new powertrain will be released closer to the production date.

Late last year Ford and GM announced that they were working together on nine- and 10-speed transmissions (presumably for cars). At that time we caught a heavily camouflaged Ford F-150 heading out of GM's Milford Proving Grounds facility. Of course, it's possible the new F-150 could be doing something unique as well. No word whether GM or Ford will use something similar to Ram's rotary dial.

The available gear ratios for both 2014 Ram 1500 eight-speed transmissions are: 1st (4.71:1), 2nd (3.14:1), 3rd (2.10:1), 4th (1.67:1), 5th (1.29:1), 6th (1.00:1), 7th (0.84:1), 8th (0.67:1) and Reverse (3.30:1).

Harbor Contractor II Boosts Capacity and Effectiveness

This body, mounted on a 2014 GMC 1-ton Dually chassis is a Harbor Contractor II Body. The twist with the Contractor II Body is the tall  and deep compartment at the front of the body. The open lid typical upper box is retained, but the real value of this body is the combination of the two types of boxes.

You can see how much more storage capacity there is in the Contractor II arrangement. The shelves are moveable or removable and the compartment is deep enough to carry a wide variety of items, including tall items.

This unit also has a removable forklift loadable rack, fold-down contractor style gates in the rear, and a class IV receiver, and 7-pin trailer connector. It also has a great full-length step for easy rear access.

2015 GMC Canyon: Good Things Come in Small Packages

Smaller size and maneuverable solution is all new for pickup customers

DETROIT – The growing popularity of smaller vehicles applies to pickups as well, and customers say maneuverability is a top reason for choosing a midsize pickup. The 2015 GMC Canyon delivers the right size vehicle for consumers who are looking for a more agile pickup.
“An increasing number of customers don’t need the full capability of a full-size pickup, yet desire the functionality a pickup offers,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “These customers appreciate the smaller size of mid-sized pickups, with their ability to easily fit in a garage, travel downtown areas of big cities, and navigate crowded parking lots. The all-new 2015 GMC Canyon represents the best of both worlds in this sense.”
Packed with capability and comfort, the 2015 GMC Canyon is the smaller sibling of the 1500 Sierra full-size pickup, and the 2500 and 3500 Sierra Heavy Duty pickups.  The 2015 GMC Canyon short-bed crew cab is 212.7 inches long, 17 inches shorter than a comparable Sierra 1500, making it an easier fit in many parking spots and garages. Canyon’s overall width of 74.3 inches is five inches narrower than Sierra and two inches wider than the Terrain compact SUV, providing easier maneuverability around town. Yet the smaller size does not sacrifice functionality or capability. 
“We engineered the 2015 GMC Canyon to be very capable and functional for mid-size pick up owners,” said Anita Burke, vehicle chief engineer for Canyon. “We know customers have varied needs for a pickup in this segment, using their vehicle to commute to work during the week, transport children to school and other activities. But on the weekend, they have a very different set of needs that match their active lifestyles. The 2015 Canyon delivers on all these needs.”

The 2015 Canyon has a tight turning radius of approximately 41 feet (12.6 meters), making it easier to maneuver when parking or backing into tight spots. And features like electric power steering provide easier maneuverability in tight situations.
“With its smaller size and associated nimble nature, Canyon provides pickup capability and exceptional comfort in an efficient and more manageable package,” Aldred said.

The 2015 GMC Canyon arrives in showrooms this fall.

2015 Chevrolet and GMC Pickups, SUVs to Offer Eight-Speed Transmission

DETROIT – Chevrolet and GMC have confirmed a new eight-speed automatic transmission will be standard on 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon Denali/Yukon XL Denali models equipped with the 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8.

The GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed is approximately the same size and weight as the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic. Its 7.0 overall gear ratio spread is wider than GM’s six-speed automatic transmissions, providing a numerically higher first gear ratio to help drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering. The 8L90 also enables numerically lower rear axle ratios, which reduce engine rpm on the highway.

With 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, the 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 is the most powerful engine offered in any light-duty pickup, and offers a maximum available trailer rating of 12,000 pounds, based on SAE J2807 Recommended Practices. As with other EcoTec3 engines, it seamlessly switches to four-cylinder operation under lighter loads to improve fuel economy.

Additional technical details and the EPA estimated fuel economy will be announced closer to the start of production in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Knapheide Horizontal Series 8' Service Body with Electric Locks

Jordan is giving us a tour of a great Knapheide 8' Service Body with a couple twists. First twist is that this unit has the electronic locking system which has a key fob that makes it easy as pie to lock and unlock ALL the compartments on the body. The second twist is this truck has a horizontal series compartment on both sides of the truck. What this means is that the typical rear vertical compartment is replaced with a much longer horizontal compartment with the addition of a small square compartment below. This configuration allows for loading items that are long and would not fit in the typical compartments, and also makes for greater and more effective storage or normal sized items. It is rare to see this model in stock, but Jordan stocks it.

Easily One Of The Most Useful Truck Bodies On The Planet

Jordan gives us a tour of one of the fastest selling truck bodies he stocks. This is the Knapheide KUV lowpro Service Body. It is often called a Plumber Body because plumbers love them, but so does most other contractors. And why not? It is a Service Body on the outside and this one has the awesome Sortimo organization system on one side. The body is just barely taller than the chassis so it gets in and out of tight spots. It is mounted on a cutaway chassis that has a very short turning radius and the low mounting height of the floor of the body. Then, inside, there are shelves with outside access, a dry place to put large items like water heaters, air conditioning units, and so much more, and finally, the capacity to get it all done. This is a V6, half-ton, double-cab pickup that saves on fuel, maintenance costs, is lower to the ground, rides better, and still has a lot of capacity for real work. It is equipped with and A.R.E. DCU Commercial Shell with one side having open access to the enclosed bed area and the other with a shelving unit.
